Description
This issue is part of the original Action Comics series, which began in 1938, with this specific issue #686 published in 1993. The story continues the tense search for Superman’s missing body in Who’s Buried in Superman’s Tomb? Guardian, while on vacation from Cadmus, is telepathically summoned back by Dubbilex as he intervenes against armed criminals. Lex Luthor grows increasingly paranoid that Superman may have only faked his death, and together with Supergirl, Turpin, and Maggie Sawyer, he investigates mysterious tunnels and ventilation shafts in Superman’s tomb. During the search, Luthor accidentally triggers an explosion that causes flooding underground. Everyone survives, but they decide to keep the disappearance of Superman’s body secret to prevent panic in Metropolis, where a cult worshipping Superman has already gathered.
Meanwhile, at Cadmus, Paul Westfield and his team work on obtaining tissue samples from Superman’s body for cloning purposes. Guardian is disturbed by the plan, but agrees to continue only if the senior doctors take over the project. The story also includes emotional farewells between Lois Lane, the Kents, and Lana Lang, emphasizing the sorrow and uncertainty following Superman’s death.
