Iconic collector card featuring Manchester United legend David Beckham from the 1996-97 Merlin Premier Gold England series. The card captures Beckham celebrating after his legendary half-way line goal against Wimbledon on 17 August 1996, a moment that instantly turned him into a global football star.
During the match, with United leading 2-0, Beckham noticed goalkeeper Neil Sullivan was far off his line and scored from more than 52 metres. His calm celebration with raised arms, shown on this card, became a symbol of the beginning of a new era in English football.
Beckham later said the goal changed his life, describing how the ball seemed to hang in the air for ages before dropping into the net and sending the stadium into celebration. The goal was ranked 18th in Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Sporting Moments in 2002 and later voted by Sky Sports fans as the best opening-day Premier League goal of all time.
