Why Are First Issues So Important?

The first issues of comic book series, commonly referred to as issue #1, are extremely sought after by collectors. They symbolize the beginning of a legend—the moment when a hero’s story officially began. These issues also often establish the character’s basic visual style, universe, and central themes.

For example, Superman #1 from 1939 was the character’s first standalone issue, even though Superman had previously debuted in another comic. This brings us to another important term:

First Appearance

For many collectors, the first appearance of a character is even more important than issue #1 itself. This is the first scene or issue in which the character appears at all. It may take place in a completely different series and often predates the hero’s own standalone comic book series by months or even years.

A classic example is Spider-Man, who first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962), while his own series began later with The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963). Although the latter comic is also valuable, Amazing Fantasy #15 is considered Spider-Man’s true birth and has a significantly higher value.

🥇 1. Action Comics #1 (1938) – USD 6 Million

The first appearance of Superman, which launched the superhero era. In April 2024, a CGC 8.5 copy sold for a record-breaking USD 6 million.

This comic is considered the most important in the history of the comic book industry because it introduced Superman, who would go on to become a pop culture icon. In the story created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman battles a criminal named Butch Matson, becoming the first superhero to fight for justice. The character subsequently inspired many other comic book heroes.

🥈 2. Superman #1 (1939) – USD 5.3 Million

The first standalone Superman issue, which sold for USD 5.3 million in April 2022. This particular copy came from the famous “Edgar Church/Mile High” collection and received a CGC 8.0 grade.

This comic is highly important because it focuses on Superman’s development as a character and shows his first adventures in Metropolis, where he becomes a protector against dangerous criminals.

🥉 3. Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962) – USD 3.6 Million

In September 2021, a CGC 9.6 copy sold for USD 3.6 million, making it the most expensive comic ever sold at that time.

In this comic, Peter Parker, an ordinary teenager, gains spider-like abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Following the death of his Uncle Ben, he decides to use his powers to fight crime. This comic laid the foundation for Spider-Man’s popularity and became one of the most iconic comic books of all time.

4. Action Comics #1 (1938) – USD 3.56 Million

Another copy of this iconic issue, known as the “Rocket Copy,” was auctioned for USD 3.56 million in 2022. This copy also features Superman’s debut and is considered one of the most sought-after comics among collectors.

Copies like this are extremely rare because only a limited number of original 1938 issues have survived.

5. Captain America Comics #1 (1941) – USD 3.12 Million
